Benjamin C. Milam collection, 1829-[197-?] (bulk 1844-1904).

This collection consists mainly of business papers of Benjamin C. Milam of Frankfort, KY. The papers include orders and payments for the Meek and Milam fishing reels, tax receipts, rent receipts, and some personal correspondence from Milam's niece and nephew Annie Willard and Tom Shockley from Colorado. A few documents relate to Milam's ownership of shares in the Frankfort and Cincinnati Railroad Company. Of note is a contract between John W. Milam, Samuel Holmes, and David Comingore for marketing of the "Milam Cancelling Machine." Also included are two small account books of Benjamin C. Milam's and one account book kept by George Stagg. Some newspaper clippings and brochures concerning the Milam fishing reel are present.

In 1835 jewelers Jonathan and Benjamin Meek, of Frankfort, Ky. began manufacturing a version of the "Kentucky Fishing Reel" which had been invented ca. 1807 by George Snyder of Paris Ky. Their company was named Meek and Meek, but was changed to Meek and Milam in 1853 when Jonathan left the company and their apprentice Benjamin Milam was made a partner.
